Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, widely regarded as one of the most influential directors in Tamil cinema, has passed away at the age of 84. He reportedly breathed his last at his Chennai residence on Wednesday after battling age-related health issues. Reports suggest his health had deteriorated in recent months, particularly following the loss of his son, Manoj Bharathiraja, in 2025.
Bharathiraja was known as Aladdin of Tamil cinema
Bharathiraja revolutionised Tamil cinema by taking storytelling out of studio sets and into real village locations. His landmark film 16 Vayathinile sparked a wave of rural-themed films and brought a new sense of realism to the industry. He also changed the portrayal of heroes and heroines, opting for natural appearances over glamour.
Known for his original storytelling, Bharathiraja introduced several future stars, including Karthik, Revathi, Radhika Sarathkumar and Vijayashanti. He also mentored aspiring filmmakers through his film institute. His films often explored social issues, particularly women's experiences, relationships and caste discrimination, making him one of Indian cinema's most respected and influential directors.

Actor Ravi Mohan took to X and wrote, "Tamil cinema has lost one of its greatest visionaries. Bharathiraja sir's films celebrated people, emotions, and the beauty of life in its purest form. His contribution to cinema will remain timeless and his influence immeasurable. My heartfelt condolences to his family & Rest in peace, sir."

Chiranjeevi Konidela called Bharathiraja 'greatest storyteller'. He wrote on X, "Indian cinema has lost one of its greatest storytellers, #Bharathiraja garu. He transformed the fragrance of village soil, the beauty of human relationships, the innocence of love, and the emotions of ordinary people into timeless cinematic poetry. His films touched millions of hearts and inspired generations of filmmakers. A recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri and several National Film Awards, Bharathiraja garu’s contribution to Indian cinema is immeasurable.
"I was fortunate to work under his direction as ’𝓟𝓾𝓵𝓲𝓻𝓪𝓳𝓾’ in 𝓐𝓻𝓪𝓭𝓱𝓪𝓷𝓪. His passion for cinema, simplicity and dedication to his craft left a lasting impression on me. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy will live on forever through his remarkable films. Rest in peace, “Iyakkunar Imayam” Bharathiraja garu. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers. Om Shanti," he wrote.
