BTS leader RM has always been one to put the group before himself. He has led BTS to record-breaking achievements and global success over the years. But what many fans might not know is that he was once asked to choose between staying in BTS or going solo. The moment happened during a hidden-camera prank early on in the group’s trip, and RM’s response demonstrated just how dedicated he was to his bandmates and BTS’s future.
Why BTS Leader RM Was Once Asked To Choose Between Band And Solo Career?
Back in 2014, RM had participated in a TV show which had prepared a hidden camera prank for him. In the episode, BTS' founder, Bang Si-hyuk, called RM into the room and began criticizing his abilities as a leader and producer. Other members of the band were hiding in another room, watching the situation unfolding.
As the conversation turned serious, Bang Si-hyuk asked RM if he wanted to stay with BTS or go solo. Asking the question several times made the prank more believable. RM was an engaged and respectful participant during the discussion.

RM Chose BTS Without Hesitation
When directly asked, “Solo or Bangtan Boys? RM replied immediately, “Bangtan.” He also made it clear that he had no intention of leaving the group and was committed to remaining as BTS’ leader. The show’s viewers and fans across the globe were impressed by his quick response.

Prank Truth Comes Out
Soon after, RM found out this whole thing was a prank. After the emotional moment, the other BTS members came out laughing and checked on him. In an interview after the prank, RM confessed that he was completely fooled and had no idea there were hidden cameras.

Why Fans Still Remember 2014 Prank?
The incident remains one of the most discussed moments in BTS history. For many ARMY members it was a highlight of RM’s loyalty to the group and dedication to the six other members — Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin, V and Jungkook. But RM’s answer proved that while each member will go on to have successful solo careers, BTS will always come first.
