Ice Facial vs Steam Facial:  From Alia Bhatt to Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, the ice facial has led the celebrity trend; over time, it has become everyone’s go-to skin prep habit before a big event. Ice facials are also known as ice dipping. The trend rapidly took over the internet because it was economical, convenient, and also gave your skin that instant refreshment, especially in the summer season.

However, other than these aspects, do ice facials truly upgrade your skin’s texture or overall quality, and what is better, an ice facial or a steam facial? Let’s find out.

Why Internet Is Loving Ice Facial Over Steam Facial?

The internet, especially the younger generation, is more inclined towards ice facials due to numerous reasons. The trend is influenced by celebrities; it is quick and cheap. But, traditionally, from spas to home remedies, the steam facial has always been a significant part of skin treatments. A steam facial is known to open pores and deep-cleanse the skin. So, which is actually better? Let’s find the answer as per your skin type, goals, and how you use each method.

What Is Ice Facial And How It Helps Your Skin?

Dipping your face in icy water causes an immediate effect of cold-induced vasoconstriction, due to which blood vessels tighten, reducing redness and puffiness. I personally feel my skin looks more refreshed, with less puffiness around the under eyes, also reduced and gives off a temporary tightening effect that smooths fine lines visually.

Sometimes, in scorching summer heat or after a workout, an ice facial also soothes irritated skin or inflamed skin by temporarily decreasing oil production on the skin. However, some people prefer rubbing ice on the face; however, as I have sensitive skin, dipping my face in icy water feels more gentle.

The Right Way To Do An Ice Facial:

  • Step 1: Take a clean bowl with a wide mouth.
  • Step 2: Fill it up with fresh water.
  • Step 3: Add a generous amount of ice cubes.
  • Step 4: You can also add cucumber or rose, in the icy water (optional)
  • Step 4: Now, hold a breath, dip your clean face into the bowl for 10-15 seconds.
  • Step 5: Then again dip for 2-3 times for 10-15 minutes.
  • Step 6: Pat dry and moisturise your face with your go-to moisturiser.

Note: Do not dip your face in water for a long time; it may shock the skin and cause more harm than benefit.

Who Should Opt For An Ice Facial?

People usually opt for an ice facial before getting ready to go somewhere special, as part of their skin prep regimen, before makeup. However, individuals with oily skin, active inflammatory breakouts (like a new pimple), or morning facial puffiness may opt for an ice facial.

What Is Steam Facial And How It Helps Your Skin?

Steam facials have been used for years as a part of a skin cleansing regimen. Steam facials are all about using warm air that relaxes and softens the outer layer of your skin, opening pores and gently cleansing sebum and debris in pores, due to pollution, everyday makeup and other things. Steam also increases circulation, supporting cellular turnover and giving skin a plumper, oxygenated appearance.

The Right Way To Take A Steam Facial:

  • Step 1: Cleanse your face thoroughly with a mild face wash.
  • Step 2: Use a steamer or boil a bowl of water. Avoid too hot water.
  • Step 3: Keeping your face 8 to 10 inches above the steaming water, wrap the towel over your face and bowl, like a tent.
  • Step 4: Only take steam for 5-7 minutes, not more than that.
  • Step 5: Gently pat dry your face with a soft cloth.
  • Step 6: Now, your pores are open and soft, you may apply your favourite clay mask or serum.

Who Should Opt for A Steam Facial?

If your skin concern is pore-softening, prepping the skin for extractions, and enhancing product absorption, steam is more effective. However, avoid steam if you are suffering from a skin allergy or a chronic skin condition.

Important Warnings:

  • Always patch test or consult an expert if you have sensitive skin or any skin condition.
  • Never overdo ice facial or steam, as you may strip your protective skin barrier.
  • Mindfulness is the key.
  • It is also important to note that neither of the above-mentioned home fascial treatments replaces a proper skincare routine.

Ice Facial vs Steam Facial: My Takeaway

An ice facial and a steam facial both serve different purposes. Use steam for your occasional deep skincare days, for deeper cleansing and product absorption. On the other hand, use an ice facial to reduce inflammation, puffiness, calm the skin afterwards, or add a quick wake-up boost.
