Trump vs Pope Leo: A post by US President Donald Trump featuring an AI-generated image of himself in a Jesus-like pose has sparked controversy and debate after it was deleted from his social media account on Monday.

The image, shared on Truth Social on sunday, showed Trump in flowing robes with glowing hands appearing to heal a patient, surrounded by American flags, military aircraft, and angelic imagery. The post quickly drew criticism from political opponents and even some conservative supporters.

Responding to questions from reporters about the post, Trump defended it, saying, " I did post it and I thought it was me as a doctor".

He further explained his intention behind the image, saying, "It has to do with the Red Cross worker, which we support, and only the fake news can come up with that one. I just heard about it, and I did. How did they come up with that? It’s supposed to be me as a doctor making people better. And I do make people better. I make people a lot better."

The controversy emerged amid heightened tensions between Trump and Pope Leo, who had criticised the US-Israeli war against Iran as inhumane. Prior to sharing the image, Trump had also attacked the pontiff, calling him “WEAK on crime and terrible for Foreign Policy.”

Pope Leo, the first US-born pope, responded that he had “no fear” of the Trump administration and would continue to speak out.

The digitally created image was later removed from Trump’s account on Monday morning. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The episode follows Trump’s broader criticism of Pope Leo XIV, whom he called “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy,” while also claiming the pontiff was influenced by political considerations. Trump further said he did not believe the Catholic Church leader was “doing a very good job,” describing him as “a very liberal person,” and urged him to “stop catering to the Radical Left”.
