At least 15 people have been killed while 20 others have been injured in a suicide bomb blast outside a police station in Swat district of Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The blast caused panic among protesters, who ran to safety.
According to Swat district police officer Umar Khan, cited by Dawn, the attacker detonated the explosives when police tried to stop and search him at the station gate.
Investigation launched
After the blast, security forces immediately cordoned off the area and launched an investigation. The blast occurred near the police station as hundreds of people were demonstrating at the nearby Kabal Chowk against the recent surge in terrorism in the Swat Valley.
The injured were rushed to Saidu Sharif Teaching Hospital for treatment. So far, no terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Speaking about the explosion, Swat's Deputy Inspector General of Police, Fida Hussain said the attacker tried to enter the police station but was stopped at the gate. Before the cops could check him, he detonated the explosive vest, killing seven people, including four police officers.
Sources told news agency PTI that the blast appeared to be a suicide attack. However, there was no immediate official confirmation on the nature of the blast.
A lot of videos have been making rounds, showing hundreds of people in a peaceful protest rally against the rise in terrorism, before the explosion. The footage further showed protestors in a state of panic as thick smoke billowed into the air. The visuals also showed damaged vehicles and scattered debris across the road.
