Rescuers on Sunday recovered the body of renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, days after he and nine members of his expedition team were killed in a devastating avalanche on Broad Peak, one of the world's highest mountains in northern Pakistan.
The disaster struck around midday on Thursday as the 10-member expedition team was ascending Broad Peak, which stands at 8,047 metres. The avalanche hit at an altitude of approximately 6,600 metres. The team lost all communication on Thursday morning before reports of the massive avalanche emerged later that evening, according to official statements cited by Dawn.
"The ground rescue team has reached Nims Dai (Purja) at approximately 5,700 m on Broad Peak -- a mountain he loved and a mountain that has now taken him from us," the Alpine Club of Pakistan posted on social media.

Alpine Club of Pakistan General Secretary Ayaz Shigri said the rescue team was bringing down four bodies, including those of Purja, two other Nepali climbers, and a Chinese national.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan said the ground rescue team reached the location of renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, popularly known as "Nims Dai", at an altitude of about 5,700 metres.
According to the club, rescuers also sighted three additional bodies at the same location, though their identities have yet to be confirmed.
