Amid ongoing Middle East tensions, Italy’s government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of a defence cooperation deal with Israel, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Tuesday, citing the conflicts in West Asia.

Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has moved to halt the automatic renewal of the country’s defence cooperation agreement with Israel. Her government, considered one of Israel’s close allies in Europe, has in recent weeks expressed concern over Israeli military actions in Lebanon. Those affected include Italian troops serving there under a UN mandate.

“In light of the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defence agreement with Israel,” said PM Meloni.
