US-Iran War: The Iranian delegation reportedly altered its return route after officials said they faced direct security threats following unsuccessful talks with the United States in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Speaking to Lebanese outlet Al-Mayadeen, Iranian political analyst Mohammad Marandi said the delegation, which included Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, changed aircraft mid-journey and reached Tehran via an alternative route by bus and train.
'Received Direct Threats That Our Plane Might Be Attacked': Marandi
Marandi, who accompanied the Iranian delegation to Islamabad, said that the delegation felt seriously threatened during their return from negotiations in Pakistan.
He noted that the delegation received warnings while heading for negotiations with the United States in Islamabad. "We received direct threats while en route to Islamabad that our plane might be attacked," Al-Mayadeen quoted Marandi as saying.
He further stated that the delegation took precautionary measures upon returning from Pakistan, including switching aircraft mid-journey and continuing via an alternative route by bus and train.
"As a result, on the way back to Tehran, the delegation secretly switched planes," he added.
The Iranian delegation's aircraft was later diverted to the Iranian city of Mashhad, where it made an emergency landing. From there, the delegation continued its journey to Tehran by train, car, and bus, the political analyst said.
"We don't trust the United States," Marandi said on Tuesday, adding that "we are also being very busy preparing ourselves for the next round of war."
He further said Iran "always knew the United States was deceitful", adding that the country is strengthening its military capabilities while we are at the negotiating table.
US-Iran Negotiations Could Resume In Two Days
United States President Donald Trump on Tuesday confirmed that peace talks with Iran could resume in Pakistan over the next two days.
The latest development comes days after the US delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, and the Iranian delegation, led by Speaker Ghalibaf, faced a deadlock over Tehran's nuclear program while discussing an agreement to end the conflict and reach a permanent ceasefire.
While talking to the New York Post, the US President said, "You should stay there, really, because something could be happening over the next two days, and we're more inclined to go there."
