Fable was originally planned for a release in autumn 2026, but that window may not hold. There’s growing talk that Microsoft is considering pushing the game further into the year, not because of development issues, but to avoid going head-to-head with Grand Theft Auto 6.

The concern is fairly straightforward. GTA 6 is set to launch on November 19, and it’s easily one of the most anticipated games in years. Any major title releasing too close to it risks getting lost in the noise, no matter how big it is on its own.

Microsoft May Be Playing It Safe

The update comes from journalist Jeff Grubb, who mentioned on the Game Mess Mornings podcast that Microsoft is internally discussing a shift. According to him, the game isn’t being delayed out of 2026 entirely, but it could be pushed later within the same year.

“We know Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming out later this year and we know that has caused these companies to think about how they are releasing their games,” Grubb said.

He added that, based on what he’s heard, Microsoft is “moving Fable later into the year.”

“Now it's not being moved out of this year, it's still coming this year apparently. But they're moving it later to get out of the way of Grand Theft Auto,” he said.

If that happens, the most likely scenario is a December release, placing some distance between the two launches without pushing Fable into 2027.

GTA 6 Is Already Shaping Industry Decisions

This wouldn’t be the first time a massive release has influenced the wider industry. Rockstar has already locked in November 19 for GTA 6 after multiple delays, and that date is now becoming a key marker for other developers planning their own launches.

Studios are clearly aware of the impact GTA 6 will have. It’s not just another big game, it’s the kind of release that dominates attention for weeks, if not months.

What We Know About Fable So Far

Earlier this year, Playground Games shared a deeper look at Fable during the Xbox Developer Direct, showing off its world and gameplay systems. The game is set in Albion, a large open world that the studio describes as fully explorable from early on, without heavy restrictions.

There’s still no exact release date yet, but that could change soon. The Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 is expected to bring more updates, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Microsoft uses that stage to confirm the final launch timing.

Whenever it does arrive, Fable is set to launch across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. For now, the bigger question isn’t whether it’s coming in 2026, but exactly when.
