What Happened With The Referee?
Upon Artan’s arrival at the Miami International Airport from Istanbul for officiating in the 23rd edition of the mega event, he was denied entry by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and sent back. Later FIFA clarified about the incident and mentioned that he would be unable to participate in the tournament. This was heartbreaking news for both Omar Artan and Somalian fans as his dream ended before even the start of the event.
Why Was Artan Denied Entry?
According to U.S. authorities' reports, Artan was found to be "inadmissible" due to unspecified concerns. The Department of Homeland Security later declared that the decision was linked to alleged relations with various members suspected of being connected with terrorist organizations. Although Artan denied any such links openly.
The incident also came to light amid broader U.S. immigration restrictions affecting citizens from several countries, including Somalia. Despite reportedly holding valid travel documents and FIFA accreditation, Artan was not allowed to enter the country.
Artan’s Reactions
He described the unforeseen event as "fate" and thanked FIFA and his supporters for standing by him throughout his misfortune. He added, “I want the Somali public to take comfort in this and remain confident.” The Somali Football Federation (SFF) expressed deep sadness, acknowledging the importance of Artan's selection, which was earned through "years of dedication, professionalism, and integrity." A spokesperson from FIFA explained, “FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes.”
The incident sparks a question about FIFA and the USA on restricting talented individuals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Although the Somalian referee was seen in all smiles at the airport after he received a warm welcome from the people of Somalia as their champion.
