The UP government has announced a major initiative aimed at benefiting drivers and vehicle owners in the state. As per the initiative, services such as updating the date of birth on a driving licence, transferring a number from an old vehicle to a new vehicle and temporarily suspending permits can now be accomplished via online process.

New system implemented

These changes arose as a result of changes made to the Motor Vehicles Rules 1998 by the State Government to implement a new process that simplifies the procedure to provide increased access to key transport-related services. With this update, the services will now be accessed via both the Vahan and Sarathi portals, providing a more efficient and faster service.

The new process allows applicants to correct an error, such as a date of birth on a driving licence, by applying online to make this correction.

Key Documents Required:

  • High school certificate
  • Birth certificate
  • Certificate issued by the Chief Medical Officer

Additionally, owners may transfer their existing registration number from an old vehicle to a new vehicle within one year of the transfer of ownership. This process must be completed through the Vahan portal and, once completed, will trigger issuance of a certificate.

If the old license plate number is not registered on the new vehicle within one year, the old license plate number will be revoked. This amendment became effective upon publication in the official gazette.
