Special Parliament Session: The centre on Thursday is set to table three key bills, including on delimitation of constituencies and on implementation of women's reservation from the 2029 Lok Sabha polls, in the special sitting of the budget session of the parliament. While the government has urged all the parties to extend their support to pass the bills, the opposition parties have shown their reservations. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the opposition continues to support the women reservation bill; however, it disagrees with the way it is being implemented.
Special Parliament Session: Key Details
- The centre has called for a special sitting of Parliament on April 16,17, and 18 to pass the amendment to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
- While The Constitution Bill, and the Delimitation Bill are set to be introduced by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill will be presented by Home Minister Amit Shah.
- The NDA government has proposed to proceed with the available data of the 2011 census for the purposes of delimitation and implementation of one-third reservation for women legislators.

- While a commission would be formed for the delimitation bill for redrawing constituencies; however, the other two bills require a majority of two-thirds of the parliamentarians present in the session. The rule specifies that any walkout or abstention would bring down the majority mark.
- The centre is likely to face challenge if the opposition parties decide to oppose the bills. The majority mark in the Lok Sabha is 360, but the NDA government has only 293 members, 67 short.
- In the upper house, the centre is 21 seats short of the magic number of 163
- Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday stated that the BJP is trying to use the delimitation to its advantage for the 2029 polls. "One of the BJP's dangerous plans is to "gerrymander" all Lok Sabha seats to its advantage for the 2029 elections. The proposed Bills remove all Constitutional safeguards on delimitation, giving full power to the Delimitation Commission which the govt itself will appoint and direct," he stated in his post on X.

- However, the centre is confident that all the bills will be passed in the parliament. "I am not going into politics of which party is saying what. No party is opposing the women's reservation in parliament and assemblies. In principle and in spirit, everybody is together," Union minister Kiren Rijiju stated.
