Heavy monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in southern Indian states. Eight people have died in rain-related incidents in Kerala, forcing thousands to flee their homes. Meanwhile, three members of a family have lost their lives in a landslide in Shivamogga, neighboring Karnataka.
8 killed in Kerala rains
So far, eight people have died in rain-related incidents in Kerala, while eight others are missing. Thirteen others have been injured. The administration is on high-alert. 5,792 people have been evacuated and sent to 209 relief camps across the state.
According to an official release, Chief Minister VD Satheesan is in constant touch with the ministers in charge of various districts and the district administrations regarding the rain situation in the state.
Rainfall has eased slightly compared to the previous day, bringing some relief to residents. Cleanup and sanitation operations have been launched in flood-affected areas. Twenty-seven houses have been completely destroyed, while 196 others have been partially damaged.

Warning for Sabarimala pilgrims
The state government has assured adequate financial assistance to the families of those who lost their lives, as well as to those rendered homeless and those who lost their crops and livelihoods. The injured are being provided with the best medical care.
The government has directed people living in hilly areas to remain vigilant. Meanwhile, the Travancore Devaswom Board has advised devotees planning to visit Sabarimala on the occasion of Nirputhri on August 2 and 3 to reconsider their trip. A security alert has been issued in the region due to heavy rains, flooding of the Pampa River, and the possibility of landslides.
3 members of the same family died in Karnataka
Incessant rain in the Malnad region of Karnataka triggered a landslide in the Indira Nagar area of Shivamogga district around 2:30 AM Sunday. Three members of a migrant worker's family were killed when a temporary shed was buried under debris.
The deceased were identified as Mallikarjuna (35), his wife Nagaveni (28), and their three-year-old son. The family, from Kokkaregaru village in Gangavathi taluk of Koppal district, had been living in the shed for the past two years.
Police and the Fire and Emergency Services Department arrived at the scene and conducted a rescue operation, pulling the three bodies from the rubble. Another worker living in a nearby shed was seriously injured in the incident and has been admitted to Jayachamarajendra Hospital in Tirthahalli.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the accident. The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by migrant workers living in landslide-prone areas during the monsoon.
