Sold Home, Moved To Rent: Three Of Family Die By Suicide In Pune; Last Note Reveals Financial Troubles, Heavy Debt

Pune: Three members of a family died at their residence in Pune's Pimpri area in what police suspect was a suicide driven by financial distress. Police said all three were found unconscious, prompting an investigation into the incident.

Three Of Family Die By Suicide In Pune's Pimpri

The deceased have been identified as 50-year-old Vinod Pillai, his 45-year-old wife Sirja Pillai, and their 19-year-old daughter Poornima Pillai.

According to a report by NDTV, Vinod, a computer science graduate from IIM Ahmedabad, died before he could be given medical help. Sirja, who worked as a coordinator at the school, and Poornima were rushed to a nearby hospital and admitted to the ICU, but both succumbed shortly during treatment.

Suicide Note Cites Financial Troubles, Heavy Debt

In a suicide note recovered from the scene, Vinod stated that the family's financial troubles had led him to take the extreme step, adding that no one else should be held responsible.

According to police, the family had been struggling with heavy debt for years. They had sold their home in Nehru Nagar three years ago and were living in a rented accommodation in Morwadi.

Following the incident, the police registered a case, and further investigation is underway.

How The Incident Came To Light?

The incident came to light when Sirja did not report for work. When her colleagues could not reach her, they informed her relatives, who rushed to the residence to check on the family.

Upon arrival, officers from the Sant Tukaram Nagar police station recovered a suicide note along with a container of sodium nitrate. Preliminary investigations suggest that Vinod purchased the chemical online, and the toxic fumes released from burning it filled the room, leading to the deaths.
