Bihar Politics: The Janata Dal United (JDU) veteran Nitish Kumar resigned as the chief minister of Bihar after serving the state for over two decades. BJP leader and outgoing Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary was unanimously elected as the leader of the NDA legislative party. He later submitted a written claim to Governor (Retd.) Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain on Tuesday evening. Choudhary will take an oath as the 24th chief minister of the state on Wednesday at around 11 AM.
The process of power transfer began on Tuesday at 11 AM when Nitish Kumar attended the final meeting of his cabinet. He returned to his official residence after the meeting and proceeded to Lok Bhawan at 3.15 PM to submit his resignation to the governor and returned to his residence. Several other prominent politicians, including Samrat Choudhary; former Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, JDU National Executive President Sanjay Kumar Jha, and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also accompanied him to Lok Bhawan.
A meeting of the legislative party was held at the BJP office at 2.30 PM, where the former Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha proposed the name of Choudhary for the post of leader. Along with him, other party leaders, including Mangal Pandey, Dilip Jaiswal, Renu Devi, and MLA Raghavendra Pratap Singh supported the proposal.
A joint meeting of the NDA Legislature Party was held later in the Central Hall of the Legislative Assembly, where Nitish Kumar declared Samrat Choudhary as the leader of the alliance. The JDU veteran further stated that Bihar will continue to prosper under the leadership of Choudhary, adding that he will continue to guide the new government.
In a major transition, Bihar has got its first chief minister from the saffron party. Along with him, two deputy chief ministers from the JDU are also set to take oath on Wednesday.
