Railway Mishap Averted: Engine Catches Fire After Electric Line Falls Over Train In Ujjain, Passengers Jump Off In Panic

A major accident was averted near Ujjain's Mahidpur Road railway station on Sunday morning after a 25,000 kV overhead electric (OHE) line broke and fell on the engine of the Ratlam-Kota passenger MEMU train passing through the station.

The incident triggered a fire in the upper part of the engine while the train was moving. The incident caused chaos at the scene. Many passengers, travelling by the train, jumped from the carriages in panic, resulting in injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, passengers started screaming as they saw flames rising from the engine. Fearing electric shock, many passengers jumped from the moving train in panic. However, the train continued on, leaving the broken OHE wire behind, averting a major accident.

Rail traffic was disrupted for two hours

Upon receiving information about the incident, a team of railway officials arrived at the scene. The railway department was quick to shut down the power supply to prevent any further mishap. The department rushed to the site brought the situation under control at the affected track. However, rail traffic on the track remained disrupted for almost two hours due to the scary incident.

Railway employees immediately started repairing the broken overhead line, after which rail traffic gradually returned to normal.

Euewitness, passengers allege negligence

The eyewitnesses and local passengers at Mahidpur Road Railway Station have expressed displeasure with the railway administration, alleging that similar incidents have occurred before.

Passengers say that despite these repeated incidents, the railway has neglected safety and maintenance. Passengers have now demanded a high-level investigation into the entire matter.
