A devastating accident occurred on Wednesday evening near the Karchana area of the Delhi-Howrah rail route, resulting in the deaths of five individuals. While three victims have been identified, authorities are still working to establish the identities of the remaining two. High-ranking officials from the police and GRP reached the site at Pachdevra village to initiate an investigation.
Sequence Of Events
The tragedy unfolded in two stages near Pachdevra village:
Initial Discovery: At approximately 6:15 pm, the loco pilot of the Kalka Express spotted a body on the tracks and performed an emergency stop. He immediately alerted the control room.
The Second Mishap: As the Kalka Express remained stationary, several passengers disembarked onto the tracks. According to witnesses, when the train sounded its horn to signal departure, four young men who were standing on the parallel track moved to re-board.
Fatal Impact: At that precise moment, the Purshottam Express, traveling in the opposite direction, struck the four individuals.
Victims Identified
Authorities have confirmed the identities of three deceased persons:
- First decreased indentified as 36-year-old Baliram Bhagat, a resident of Bihar. His body was the first discovered on the track, which prompted the train to stop.
- Second identified as 19-year-old Akash, Son of Giriraj, from Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh.
- Third victim identified as 20-year-old Sunil Kumar, son of Santlal, from Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh.
Two individuals remain unidentified. Police and railway officials are currently working to establish their identities.
The circumstances leading to Baliram Bhagat's initial death remain unclear. Regarding the other four, conflicting reports suggest they may have stepped out to either inspect the first body or for a brief personal break.
Official Response
The accident caused significant disruption to rail traffic on the busy Delhi-Howrah line. Senior officials, including Additional Police Commissioner Dr. Ajay Pal Sharma and SP GRP Prashant Verma, oversaw the removal of the bodies for post-mortem examination.
SP Prashant Verma said, "The Kalka Express had stopped due to a person being run over. During this halt, some passengers crossed over to the adjacent track and were unfortunately struck by the incoming Purshottam Express. We are investigating the matter thoroughly; if any criminal negligence is uncovered, legal action will follow."
