A four-year-old boy died after allegedly falling into an open tubewell chamber near a slum settlement in Noida's Sector 123 on Friday evening, prompting police to register a case of negligence against unidentified persons.

The child was found inside a nearly four-foot-deep cemented chamber housing a tubewell operated by the Noida Authority, PTI cited officials. Initial investigation indicated the child was alone at the time of the accident, and he was thought to have collapsed or fallen inside while playing nearby or trying to drink water.

Police swiftly rushed to the location upon receiving the report and carried the child to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. The child's parents are daily-wage labourers who reside in a nearby slum cluster.

Based on the complaint filed by the family, the police had booked cases under section 105 of the BNS concerning death by negligence.

“While the incident prima facie appears to be accidental, there appears to have been negligence on the part of the authority. We have received a complaint from the child’s parents and are examining the matter,” HT quoted Rakesh Pratap Singh, assistant commissioner of police.

After post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family of the victim. Investigation in this regard is going on. Officials of the Noida Authority refused to comment on the matter.

In another such mishap reported on July 25, a four-year-old boy had drowned when he fell into an open water tank adjacent to a shanty settlement in Sector 63A. The boy went missing while playing, and his family members and locals searching for him found the child dead inside the tank. Police had registered a case in that incident as well.
