Kolkata Metro Update: In a major update for commuters, trial runs on the Beleghata-Sector V stretch of Kolkata Metro’s Orange Line are scheduled to begin on October 10. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), which is implementing the corridor, is targeting commercial passenger services on this stretch by Christmas. This extension will take the operational length of the New Garia-Airport corridor beyond 14 km and connect Metro services directly to Sector V.

Trial Runs From October 10

The trial runs will cover the Beleghata (Metropolitan)-IT Centre section. According to TOI report, citing officials, the trials are expected to continue for a month or more. During the trials, syncing and other safety and technical checks will be carried out.

“The trial run of trains is likely to start from Oct 10, which is the day of Mahalaya. It will continue for the next one month or more as a lot of software alignment, syncing, and other necessary checks will be executed," the official said as quoted by TOI.

Three New Stations In Orange Line

Earlier on September 17, a push trolley inspection of the Beleghata (Metropolitan)-IT Centre section was completed. The Orange Line currently operates over 9 km between Kavi Subhas and Beleghata. Once the Sector V extension opens, three new stations Gour Kishore Ghosh, Nalban and Sector V, will be added, taking the operational length beyond 14 km.

"If the trial runs are successful and subsequent clearances come, we may start full passenger operations on the stretch from Christmas. We are targeting Christmas as a lot of people visit Nicco Park on the day and in the week between Christmas and New Year," the official added. Moreover, RVNL aims to open the Sector V-City Centre II section by June 2027 and the final stretch to Airport by the end of 2027.
