Assam Death Toll Hits 85 Amid Floods; 8 Missing In Kerala; 16 Houses Washed Away In Chhattisgarh | Updates

Heavy rainfall across parts of Kerala, Assam, and Gujarat triggered massive flash floods and landslides on Sunday, taking a heavy toll. The death toll in Assam has risen to 85 after three more people lost their lives in the Shivsagar district. In Kerala, at least eight people have died and eight others remain missing amidst widespread flooding.

Floods Devastated Many Lives in Assam

Reports say five districts in Assam, including Sivasagar, Golaghat, Jorhat, Charaideo, and Ghemaj, are the worst affected by the floods. Nearly 55,000 people were affected by the Sivasagar.  A total of 349 villages have been affected. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported that 85 people have died so far, and 180,000 people have been affected.

The administration has set up 54 relief camps in five districts, accommodating 13,771 people. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had reviewed the ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts in the flood-affected districts.

Eight Killed In Kerala Floods

Eight people had lost their lives, while eight had gone missing on Sunday, amidst the devastating landslides in parts of Kerala. At least 13 people have also been injured. The torrential rains have triggered landslides and waterlogging in several areas. Life has been severely affected. The administration is engaged in relief and rescue operations. Chief Minister VD Satheesan said on Sunday that 27 houses have been completely destroyed and 196 houses have been partially damaged in the heavy rains that occurred the previous day.

Nearly 5,792 people have been evacuated to 209 relief camps set up across the state. CM Satheesan said that the government will provide all possible assistance to the families of the deceased and those affected. The rainfall has decreased compared to yesterday, but people have been advised to remain vigilant, especially in hilly areas, the CM added.

Revenue Minister AP Anil Kumar claimed that he and other ministers were monitoring relief and rescue operations in the affected areas. According to the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), some areas of the state received up to 320 mm of rain on Saturday. The Ayyankunnu area in the Kannur district received the heaviest rainfall. Meanwhile, the IMD has issued an orange alert in 12 districts of the state and a yellow alert in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam districts.

The maximum temperature is 28 degrees Celsius to 29 degrees Celsius, and the minimum temperature is 24 degrees Celsius.

Chhattisgarh Weather

Many lives have been devastated in Chhattisgarh in the recent days due to flooding and landslides. In the Abujhmad region, 16 houses were washed away, while more than 50 were damaged, and two girls lost their lives. 

According to Chhattisgarh Minister Kedar Kashyap, the entire region received rainfall on July 28, 29, and 30, and the precipitation was manifold higher than the average rainfall. Conditions resembling a cloudburst developed, leading to a flood situation," Kashyap told ANI.

The India Meteorological Department has issued active weather warnings for Chhattisgarh, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning.
