Manipur Violence: 21 people were injured while two security personnel cars were set ablaze during fresh clashes reported in Manipur’s Bishnupur district on Tuesday. The tensions intensified after the angry mob attacked three vehicles carrying security forces.
Five arrests have also been made in connection to this matter, police said as per a Hindustan Times report.
"At around 1.30 PM, while en route near Thinungei, Bishnupur District, movement of the security team was obstructed by local persons following the spread of mischievous and unverified rumours regarding the identity and purpose of the personnel. A mob gathered and stopped the vehicles of the security forces. The situation escalated when some members turned violent, damaging and setting fire to two vehicles with the security personnel," said police in a statement.
As per locals, the agitated mob attacked the vehicles as they were allegedly carrying Kuki armed militants in civilian attire. Manipur Police immediately swung into action and tried to control the situation.
Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita were imposed by the district magistrate following the clashes. The order will remain imposed until further notice.
Last week, the Manipur government imposed a temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services in five districts, including Imphal, after fierce protests over the death of two children in a suspected rocket attack.
In the official statement, the government said that services, including Broadband, VSATs and VPN, will remain shut in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur to stop the spread of disinformation and false rumours.
The action was taken after an infant and a five-year-old kid were killed while their mother was injured in a bomb attack in Bishnupur district. The bomb was hurled by the suspected Kuki militants at a house in the Moirang Tronglaobi area at around 1 AM. The two children and their mother were sleeping in their bedroom when the bomb exploded in the house, the police officer said.
The incident led to massive protests. The locals staged a protest, which took a violent turn quickly as the protestors torched two oil tankers and a truck near a petrol pump in the area. The agitated protestors also burnt tyres in front of the Moirang Police Station and destroyed a makeshift police outpost.
