Several high-profile figures from Indian entertainment and public life have fallen victim to fatal shootings, often linked to underworld activity or violent disputes. Gulshan Kumar was killed in 1997 in a daylight attack tied to extortion networks, while Laila Khan and her family were murdered in 2011 in a case that later led to her stepfather Parvez Tak being sentenced to death. More recently, Baba Siddique was shot dead in Mumbai, with police arresting two suspects as the investigation continues.
Gulshan Kumar
Gulshan Kumar was shot dead on August 12, 1997, outside the Jiteshwar Mahadev Mandir in Andheri West, Mumbai, a temple he visited daily. He was attacked by assailants and shot multiple times in a brazen daylight killing that shocked the nation. Despite receiving threat calls days earlier, Gulshan Kumar had refused to pay extortion money. On the day of the incident, his bodyguard was absent, which made him vulnerable. He was confronted by the attackers while returning from the temple and tried to escape, but was fatally shot. His driver was also injured during the attack.
The murder was linked to the underworld, with Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company believed to be behind it. Investigations also named Nadeem Saifi, who was accused of involvement and later left the country. In 2001, Abdul Rauf Merchant confessed to the crime and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2002. He later fled India while on furlough but was extradited from Bangladesh in 2016 and is currently lodged in Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail.

Investigations later established that her stepfather, Parvez Tak, was responsible for the killings, reportedly carrying out the murders following a dispute.

After years of legal proceedings, the case reached a significant conclusion in May 2024, when a Mumbai court sentenced Parvez Tak to death. The court classified the crime as falling under the 'rarest of rare' category.
Baba Siddique
Baba Siddique was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Mumbai on Saturday evening, sending shockwaves across political circles. The incident has raised serious concerns about security, as the veteran leader was a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics with a long-standing public presence. A three-time MLA from Bandra West, Siddique had recently made a significant political shift.
Mumbai Additional CP Paramjit Singh Dahiya confirmed the arrest of two suspects, noting, "The incident occurred around 9:30 pm in Nirmal Nagar. Baba Siddique was taken to Lilavati Hospital after being shot. Two suspects have been arrested, and the Mumbai Crime Branch is investigating the case." "A 9.9mm pistol was used in the firing," said the officials.
