KERALA SCHOOL CLOSED On August 3: Following the heavy rain warning, educational institutions in nine districts will be closed tomorrow. The holiday has been declared in Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Kasaragod districts, applicable to all educational institutions including tuition centres and madrasas.

Due to waterlogging in Alappuzha district and relief camps being run in various schools, all educational institutions operating relief camps, including professional colleges in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks, Anganwadis, and tuition centres, will also be closed tomorrow to ensure student safety. There will be no change to public and university examinations, or any other scheduled exams.

Which Districts Have Declared Holidays?

The holiday applies to Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Thrissur, Kannur, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Malappuram, and Kasaragod districts, covering all educational institutions including tuition centres and madrasas. In Alappuzha, institutions running relief camps, including professional colleges in Chengannur and Kuttanad taluks, along with Anganwadis and tuition centres, will remain shut as well, though scheduled public and university examinations will proceed as planned.

What Does The Weather Forecast Say?

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that Kerala will receive heavy rains again from the August 6th. Compared to yesterday, there will be less rain today and tomorrow. The highest rainfall received yesterday was 36 cm. Akhil Srivastava, a senior scientist at IMD, said Kerala received extremely heavy rains yesterday, adding that a proper warning had already been given about the rains in Kerala.

Floods Claim 12 Lives, Thousands Shifted To Relief Camps

The rains have claimed 12 lives so far, with six people still missing across the state. Heavy rain warnings continue in 12 districts, and fishing has been banned off the Kerala-Lakshadweep coast. The body of Fremont, a native of Anchuthengu who went missing after falling from a fishing boat in Muthalappozhi, washed up on the Kannanthura shore, while the body of Antony, who went missing from Vizhinjam, has also been found.

Bhanupriya, a native of Coimbatore, died after being swept away by the current at Palakkad's Palakkuzhi waterfall, though her companion, who was also swept away, was rescued. The search continues for six people, including two fishermen, lost in the sea in Thiruvananthapuram.

Relief Camp And Damage Update

So far, 5,792 people have been shifted to 209 relief camps, with 13 people undergoing treatment for injuries. Twenty-seven houses have been destroyed and 196 houses partially destroyed. The Revenue Minister announced that efforts have been made to make the relief camps complaint-free, as authorities continue relief and rescue operations across the affected districts. The Meteorological Department has said the intensity of the rain will decrease by tomorrow.
