England batter Harry Brook has once again become the world’s No.1 Test batter in the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, ending teammate Joe Root’s stay at the top.
How Brook ranked top in ICC Test rankings
Brook returned to the top of the tally after scoring a crucial half-century in the first innings of England’s 115-run victory over New Zealand in the opening Test at Lord’s. He was ranked top earlier in December 2024.
Joe Root, who entered the match as the highest-ranked Test batter, struggled during the game and managed scores of just one and eight. As a result, he slipped to third place in the updated rankings.
Travis Head moved to 2nd
Australia’s Travis Head has moved up to second spot, pushing Root down the order ahead of the second Test between England and New Zealand, which begins at The Oval on June 17.
Shubman Gill in top 10
There were several other changes in the batting rankings as well. India captain Shubman Gill climbed two places to eighth after his impressive century against Afghanistan. England opener Ben Duckett gained three spots to reach 15th.
England wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith also enjoyed a rise, moving up five places to 23rd after his performance at Lord’s. New Zealand all-rounder Glenn Phillips made one of the biggest jumps, climbing 15 places to 40th in the batting rankings.
Test bowling rankings
In the bowling rankings, England fast bowler Gus Atkinson broke into the top 10 after moving up seven places to 10th. His all-round performances also helped him climb to sixth place among Test all-rounders.
New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson and England seamer Ollie Robinson returned to the Test bowling rankings following lengthy absences from red-ball cricket. Jamieson is now ranked 22nd, while Robinson occupies the 23rd spot. New Zealand’s Nathan Smith also made significant progress, rising 16 places to 43rd.
