T20 World Cup 2026: Suryakumar Yadav might have helped India win the 2026 T20 World Cup title, but his lean patch with the bat raised questions as to whether he would be a part of the team participating during the LA28 Olympics. Keeping this in mind, India's white-ball series against Ireland and England, scheduled for later this year, will be important for Yadav, as his leadership skills will be in the spotlight while his batting will be under the radar. This series will determine whether he will be given another opportunity over the next two years, when the next phase of major tournaments, including the Olympics and the T20 World Cup, will be held in 2028.
At present, Yadav remains preferred by India head coach Gautam Gambhir, whose contract extension talks are ongoing until the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia. This preferred status, however, could be reviewed based on near-term performance.
But it will be interesting to see whether the selectors would agree with Gambhir, as Suryakumar Yadav will turn 38 by the 2028 LA Olympics.

"Obviously, Surya is now leading the team. But he also has to ensure that, as a batter, he maintains a level of consistency in his performances. Obviously, he will lead in the UK, but after that, discussions going forward till 2028 could be purely performance-based," a BCCI source was quoted as saying to PTI.
Suryakumar Yadav went through a lean patch last year as his strike rate went down to 120 and he failed to score a single half-century.
But then he made a brilliant comeback this year, smashing four fifties before the 2026 T20 World Cup, and that too at a strike rate of more than 160.

But during the 2026 T20 World Cup, except for the tournament opener against the USA, he failed to perform again.
While playing against strong teams, he had scored 18 runs (against South Africa), 18 (against West Indies), 11 (against England), and 0 runs during the summit clash against the Mitchell Santner-led side.
Since the Men in Blue boast of explosive batters in the top three and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi hasn't been picked yet, Suryakumar should perform consistently, which helps him to keep his spot in the team.
Vaibhav vs Ireland or Asian Games:
The teen sensation's name has been included in the list of 35 T20 players selected by the selectors as probable for the T20I series against Ireland.
Chances are high that Sooryavanshi will break Sachin Tendulkar's record of being the youngest Indian cricketer to have made an international debut at the age of 16. The selectors are also considering whether it will be the series against Ireland or Zimbabwe, or the home T20I series against the West Indies and the Asian Games, which will be held in Japan in September.
"The BCCI logistics department asked the selectors to give at least 35 names whose Irish visas needed to be kept sorted. Since the Indian team's first port of entry will be Ireland rather than England, a UK visa won't work. Everyone requires a separate Irish visa," the source added.
It should be noted that the selectors, instead of selecting 15 players, might pick 16 or 17, as there will be too many players for the series against Ireland.
"The selection committee is convinced that Vaibhav is ready, but then you are talking about Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. All three are half-centurions in the T20 World Cup final. If you take a fourth opener, then Yashasvi Jaiswal is also there," the source added.
"Vaibhav is ready, but national selectors need to give very good reasons to drop Abhishek or Sanju. Because if you drop either one, the question arises, how is Surya keeping his place? It could be the UK tour or Zimbabwe. But the best platform could be the Asian Games or the West Indies home series, as these two are overlapping, so there will be two T20 squads. Vaibhav will play one of the two, if not earlier", the source concluded.
