What Are Vastu and Vedic Sciences? Award-Winning Astro Parduman Suri Explains

With modern businesses working towards holistic living and energy-aligned living spaces, many ancient Indian knowledge systems like Vastu Shastra and Vedic sciences are gaining relevance in several fields, such as realty, construction and personal growth.

As per Vastu consultant and astrologer Parduman Suri, these practices have no jokes in them, but are founded upon rational principles that seek to harmonise human life with the energies of nature and the cosmos.

Suri, who has just received the Global Architectural Leadership Award of Excellence in Vastu and Vedic Sciences, says that Vastu Shastra is all about spatial arrangement. “It is about the interaction of the five elements — earth, water, fire, air and space — in a built environment and how it influences the people in it,” he says.

He also says Vedic sciences include more than Vastu – for example, astrology, numerology and other traditional sciences that seek to understand patterns in time, behaviour and energy. “These sciences were designed to help you make decisions, bring clarity and never were meant to bring fear,” he says.

Although Vastu has been associated with temples and traditional houses in the past, its application in contemporary times has changed significantly. Owing to the urban environment and modern constructions, Vastu professionals have shifted their attention towards directional balancing, element positioning and flow of energy rather than major overhauls.

Suri says that sectors such as corporate planning and commercial development will be among those that increase their reliance on these principals. “The objective is to do more than just replace contemporary design – it’s to establish a framework that enhances productivity, stability, and general wellness,” he says.

Beginning his work at 15, Suri is part of a younger generation of practitioners who are attempting to connect ancient Vedic wisdom with contemporary audiences. He has worked on residential, commercial and institutional projects over the years.

His approach, he says, is a combination of ancient texts and practicalities, and engaging clearly through digital channels, he says, where he interacts with a large audience. Scholars say that there's a broader undercurrent of engagement with Vastu and associated sciences - an emerging sense of seeing mental, physical and environmental as inter-dependent.

Suri captures the essence of the emerging paradigm by calling Vedic science 'tools' instead of 'rules'. 'We don't want to say we want to control the outcomes, but that we want to orient our actions and environment in a way that supports better decisions and better balance,' he says.

With India's traditional knowledge systems increasingly meeting modern lifestyles, Vastu and Vedic science are being seen as not only cultural inheritances but also birthplaces for new ways of living.
